True Blood: Soon to be a True Classic?

OMAHA, NE – True Blood has been scaring up a nice chunk of America since its first episode on HBO in 2007. The Vampire Drama is loosely based on a series of books written by Charlaine Harris and produced by Alan Ball for HBO.  Earlier this month, HBO announced the upcoming 7th Season of True Blood will be its last.

During the course of True Blood’s run  it picked up numerous reviews and several awards. The show also explores several contemporary social issues, including discrimination and violence against minorities, including women and gays,  power of religion, the influence of the media, the importance of family and the search for an identity.

True Blood has built up a number of memorable characters and scenes over the course of its run.  This article has numerous wonderful scenes you should be sure and check out. My favorite is the Hoyt being glamored scene. And you know any scene with Rob Kazinksy is going to be a hot one!!!

While no one knows for sure what will happen in True Blood’s Seventh and final season, members of the cast dish out some possibilities in several interviews posted across the internet.  Here’s another article with some possible spoilers.

WareHouse 13 Not Keeping Itself Boxed Up!

OMAHA, NE – WareHouse 13 not keeping itself boxed up, despite impending cancellation.  Warehouse 13, on SyFy, stars Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly as two US Secret Service agents assigned to a secret Warehouse for dangerous and powerful artifacts. The show premiered on July 7th 2009, the same date of SyFy’s rebranding from SciFi to SyFy. Warehouse 13 has featured numerous artifacts both historical or mythological. Each artifact holds some special power, usually something tied to an event or person from history, notable artifacts include, Edgar Allen Poe’s pen and Marilyn Monroe’s brush. Here is a link featuring a list of artifacts and gadgets appearing in Warehouse 13.   Warehouse 13 is also known for some quirky humor, not just its vast and varied collection of artifacts.  And don’t forget to check out the gag reels!

In March 2013, SyFy announced that Warehouse 13 would end after the Fifth season. the final season will be just six episodes long. The final episodes are expected to show on SyFy in early 2014. Showrunner Jack Kenny told Airlock Alpha, “I’m just glad they gave us a nice exit.” It is unfortunate to see WareHouse 13 go as it still brings decent ratings to the SyFy.

Falling Skies Not Falling From Favor.

OMAHA, NE – Falling Skies Not Falling From Favor.   The show, starring Noah Wylie, remains one of cables’ highest rated shows on cable.  According to the Nielsen ratings for 2013, Falling Skies is one of the top 5 shows on cable in 2013.  In July 2013, TNT announced the show was renewed for a fourth season, set to premiere in the summer of 2014. The ratings should be of no surprise, Falling Skies 2 hour pilot was watched by 5.9 million viewers, making it the highest rated debut of any new series on cable in 2011.  The series was a hit for critics, Thomas Connor of the Chicago Sun-Times said, “It’s Jericho meet V, with the good from both and the bad discarded.” The show also won a Critic’s Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series in 2011.

The show was conceived by Robert Rodat and Steven Spielberg. The show was originally named Concord after a significant event in American history, but Spielberg changed the name to Falling Skies later in development. The show denotes events after an alien invasion that devastates the world’s power grid and kills off 90% of the human population. See more at FallingSkies.com

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Still Chosen.

OMAHA, NE – Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Still Chosen after all these years! Buffy, created by Joss Whedon, had some of the best stories, fight scenes and acting during its run on UPN and The WB. Buffy had some of the best villains ever created! As a Buffy fan, you enjoyed the BIG BAD for an entire season, BIG BADS like Spike and Drusilla, Glory, The Mayor and The First.  Buffy also scored with great writing, some really memorable episodes and characters as well. Who can forget the timid and nerdy Willow growing into a powerful witch, and even one season’s BIG BAD!  Or Xander and his loyal friendship to the Scoobies?  During the course of the Buffy TV series, the show was cited as one of the best TV show of all time repeatedly, including eventually being named on  TV Guide’s Top Cult Show Ever. The show never won any nomination which angered fans and media critics year after year, after the show went off the air, the TV academy aimed to make things up to its cast and crew by staging a tribute event at its headquarters in North Hollywood, but Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, didn’t show up.   I don’t blame her.  Buffy will always be tops in my mind, and millions of fans, too!

Buffy’s House was the location of many great scenes in the series, including falling in love with Angel, to building a base to fight The First.

Below, the unaired original Buffy pilot. Many fans don’t like it. I find it kind of endearing.  😀

Star Trek Still Bold on the Convention Circuit!

OMAHA, NE – Star Trek is still Boldly Going on the Convention Circuit as the cast from the previous TV series’ are still popular attractions at the nation’s biggest science fiction conventions.  While much Star Trek buzz is kept up with the Star Trek reboot in the form of two blockbuster movies, many Star Trek fans get a taste of their favorite TV show and the actors who played their favorite character at convention.  William Shatner still attends the conventions, he attended one this past weekend at SeaTac.

Star Trek fandom has brought many interesting things into the world, including Vulcan, the Star Trek Capital of Canada.  The town was dying and found a way to revive itself by attaching itself to the show with a character from a planet named Vulcan.  There is also Riverside, Iowa, selling itself as the future birthplace of Captain James T Kirk.   Not only do things in Star Trek make their mark, the actors have become icons and occasionally stand up to speak out on political issues of the day, for example, George Takei on the upcoming Sochi Olympics.

How SuperNatural Stays SuperHot!!!

OMAHA, NE – Supernatural has become one of the hottest TV shows ever created in the mega-genre of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.  And I’m not even referring to the hotness that is the show two stars, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. Supernatural was created to tackle some of America’s urban legends and has grown to be a powerhouse of a show in its own right, with some very rich storytelling of its own.  That growth continued through Season 8 which also opened some new doors for storytelling in Season 9. The following paragraphs and videos contain some spoilers from Season 8  and some spoilers of what is to come in Season 9.

Supernatural is still generating excitement as fans eagerly await for the show’s Season 9 premiere on Tuesday, October 9th, 2013.  An Enstarz article hints (spoilers) at some more story about the mysterious Men of Letters organization.  Its interesting to note how the show has kept up its signature habit of hiring fresh faced men to play various members of the Winchester family, with the latest addition of Gil McKinney as Henry Winchester, Sam and Dean Winchester‘s grandfather, from Season 8.

Supernatural buzz was highlighted throughout this year’s Comic Con Convention season. Some anticipation for the new season created when it was hinted a major rift between the brothers Winchester will emerge in the new Season 9 premiere. *I’m crossing my fingers that Dean’s gay.  😉 *

Everyone Wants a Piece of that Star Wars BUTT!

OMAHA, NE – After the news of more Star Wars movies in the near future, it seems everyone wants a piece of that hot Star Wars butt with several potential productions being discussed behind closed doors. Star Wars Butt, as in Star Wars being the hottest item in the market right now.  Fans want it, studios want it, game makers want it.  The list seems endless since the announcement of a new movie sometime in 2015.

While many Star Wars fans were expecting some of that Star Wars butt in the form of some news about Star Wars VII at Disney’s D23. They were disappointed when Disney released ABSOLUTELY no new information.  A little early, I’d say, to take Star Wars fans for a ride, Disney.  At another Star Wars event, fans hope that Star Wars butt comes in the form of a Star Wars VII that resembles the fun of the original characters and trilogy.

The hunt for a piece of that Star Wars butt takes place in other forms as well.  ABC is reportedly in talks with Lucasfilm for a TV series based on the Star Wars universe. The idea of a Star Wars TV show is nothing new, rumors and discussion have circulated since at least 2003. Currently, the largest barrier to a series is the cost, and figuring out how production of a Star Wars TV series can keep its costs low.

Then there is the hunt for that ever elusive kind of Star Wars butt that everyone tries to find.    Star Wars Speed Dating.

Babylon 5 Broke The Mold.

OMAHA, NE – As Babylon 5 celebrates its 20th anniversary, lets discuss how this ambitious little show that did, broke the mold. Babylon 5 was a dream given form by its talented maker, J Michael Straczynski, also known as JMS.  Babylon 5 was a break through in television sci-fi.  Touted as a novel for television, Babylon 5 had a beginning, middle and end, with a set time of 5 seasons to tell its story.  Babylon also brought a new type of special effects to the small screen, computer graphics.  Most television shows, most notably, Star Trek, at the time used models for there ships. Babylon 5 used computer graphics to render the Babylon 5 station and the ships views saw on the screen.  Babylon 5 was already light years ahead of its time, even for some movies. Story wise, Babylon 5 was rich in character, intrigue, action and grit.  A common saying among Babylon 5 fans was more happened in one episode of Babylon 5 than one season of Star Trek.  I think Babylon 5 still has more story to tell us, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we will get more.  (Maybe a production for Netflix?)

Below, the first 4 minutes of Babylon 5 to ever air, 20 years ago, Feb 1993.

Babylon 5 celebrated its 20th Anniversary, and it sure showed as the cast reunited for the 20th Anniversary to at several conventions in 2013, including San Diego Comic Con and Phoenix Comic Con.  JMS revealed a secret about one of Babylon 5’s stars at the Phoenix Comic-Con. Read the article here.  The article contains some wonderful video of the Babylon 5 cast together, reunited.  It is awesome seeing this cast come together, makes me even more hopeful that some new material will come from this Universe once again.

And lets not forget some sex and humor, Babylon 5 style.

Remember what Delenn looked like in the very beginning, in the Pilot?

Farscape Cast

Farscape Put the SyFy Channel on the Map

OMAHA, NE – Farscape was an ambitious creation for the SyFy Channel.  The SyFy Channel was known for just rerunning older scifi material and they wanted make their mark, they wanted to push the envelope and that was what we fans saw in Farscape.  The production was quite ambitious as far as production values, special effect, make up, sets, talented actors and crew.  Farscape actress Claudia Black remarked that Farscape was probably the most ambitious project Australia had ever seen at that point.  Producing the show in Australia saved lots of money and allowed that money to be put into things that you could see directly in the show, the sci-fi sets and makeup, the alien looks, as well as Farscape’s signature puppets from the Henson company.

One of the most ambitious things about Farscape is the writing, and fans of Farscape got to know a loveable show rich in great acting, compelling stories, exquisite plots with some of the most memorable characters, heroes, villians and aliens science fiction every saw on original television programming. Who can forget such wonderful creations as Rygel, D’Argo, Chiana and Zhaan as well as the DRD’s, Moya, and Pilot? Farscape also had a quirky sense of humor. Farscape has been over for a number of years, but it will live on!  😀

Welcome to The Sci-Fi Dominion!

Welcome to The Sci-Fi Dominion!  This blog will cover a broad genre, science fiction as well as fantasy and horror. It will attempt to keep up with current science fiction in tv and movies while reminiscing on wonderful shows from the past.  A few years ago I ran my own website, it was niche search engine for science fiction that had over 1600 websites in its directory, making it the 3rd largest scifi directory in existence at the time. Google was also getting into its groove at the time and my sci-fi directory was ranked #1 in its category.  I was very proud of it, but couldn’t keep up with all the work needed to maintain it.  It was huge undertaking for something that was supposed to be just a hobby so I had to let it go.  I have always wanted to get back into it though and I think this blog will be a nice, workable way of doing that.  😀  Especially with so much going in science fiction right now, the Star Trek reboot, Star Wars is about do another set of movies. I wish this blog had been around for Farscape, Babylon 5 and the re-imagined BattleStar Galactica, too!  Well, it will be around for the next big things to come up!! And don’t forget to like our Sci-Fi Dominion FaceBook Page!
